ADVANCED SAILING is written in the relaxed mood of a man at home with words as well as with his subject. More important, Gibbs is one of the most refreshingly cynical boating journalists around, and spares the reader much of the pedantic nonsense that boating writers have been known to regard as part of their stock in trade. ADVANCED SAILING is eminently practical. For example, it explains how taut your shrouds should be, what kind of rope or wire you should use for halyards, what type and weight of anchor should be aboard, even what type of sails should be used for certain kinds of sailing. If you are buying your first sailboat, no matter of what size, this book will direct you to the type of boat most likely to satisfy your needs as well as guide you to her proper outfitting. If you've owned a boat for a few seasons and are thinking about trading up or improving handling and performance characteristics, then you'll appreciate the practical information in the book. For example, if your boat has lee helm or excessive weather helm, then you can benefit from the corrective measures Gibbs outlines. If you're at the stage in your sailing career where you want to stop just "knocking about" and to start wringing the speed potential out of your boat, then ADVANCED SAILING is for you. If you are thinking about buying a spinnaker or if you already have one and want to improve spinnaker handling, then the chapter on spinnakers is must reading. Sailing is a surprisingly complex endeavour, particularly in this day and age, with the most sophisticated rating rules and the most highly developed boats that have ever been produced. Today even the veteran yachtsman sometimes finds himself knee-deep in concepts and terminology that are completely new. So the Jonny-Come-Lately may not be as far behind his more experienced shipmate as he might think.
