"The book is a study of a remarkable but mysterious man, Dawuso Dofe (Abidjan Mamiwater), whose life has been entirely dominated since early youth by the phenomenon popularly known as Mami Water. The qualities of the book are many and obvious. All of them cannot be mentioned here in detail. Rather, I would dwell on three areas which particularly strike me not only because of their ethnograpíiic importance but alsó because of the way the authors have treated them in a manner that fits them wonderfully into the book's subject matter. These are: • The accommodating character of traditional Ewe (and African) religion. • The outstanding talents of Dawuso, both as a religious figure, as well as a man of vision and action. • The richness, complexity and attractiveness of the arts among the Ewe. This is a very useful book which will be of interest particularly to those in the disciplines of sociology, religion and social anthropology, both students and faculty, and to all Ghanaians who want... About the Authors This book is edited by two eminent scholars, Kathleen O'Brien Wicker and Kofi Asare Opoku. The former is Professor Emerita of Religious Studies at Scripps College in the U.S. while Kofi Asare Opoku, an established authority on Traditional African Religion, was formerly Associate Professor of Religion and Ethics, Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana, and a retired Professor of Religious Studies, Lafayette College, PA, USA.
