During the past five years there has been a
rapid expansion in the application of plant
tissue and cell culture techniques in almost
all branches of pure and applied plant
science. In consequence, certain problems
have for the first time become accessible to
experimental enquiry, and new and
exciting approaches have been developed
to many classical aspects of plant
physiology and genetics. We are at present
in the centre of a period of transition during
which plant tissue and cell cultures have
emerged from being mere curiosities, and
are proving to be powerful means of
advancing plant science and solving long-
standing practical problems in food
science and agriculture.
In this volume, reviews by nineteen
international experts cover the full range of

In this volume, reviews by nineteen
international experts cover the full range of
this recent work, each review introducing a
particular field of study in which plant
tissue and cell culture techniques have
proved of key importance. They indicate
the most active areas of current research
and also the barriers to immediate progress,
whether these lie with the need for better
experimental systems or for advances in
the techniques of culture.
Tissue Culture and Plant Science 1974
provides one of the most up-to-date works
published in this relatively new area of
research. Accordingly, its appeal should
extend to a wide audience - in particular,
to those involved in College and
University teaching and in applied
research fields of plant metabolism and
development, plant breeding, plant-
pathology, general genetics, microbiology
and phytochemistry.
