The rural environment is in a period of radical change. Changes in household formation, migration into rural areas, holiday-home pressures, and easy commuting by car, are creating a rising demand for houses in the countryside. New residents in the countryside are no longer predominantly people who work there. The building techniques of the past are fundamentally altered. The most abrupt of these recent changes has been the virtual disappearance of traditional stone masonry and the introduction of timber frame construction, which brings with it constraints and opportunities affecting appearance. Craft traditions have given way to off-site préfabrication, and we live in a society exposed to a wide range of cultural choices.
This study is aimed at a wide readership: the general house-building public, planners and house designers, house builders and timber frame suppliers. It is focussed on houses which individuals provide for themselves, especially those which are built with timber... Tovább

It is focussed on houses which individuals provide for themselves, especially those which are built with timber frames. The authors describe ctirrent design and procurement practice. They identify the characteristics of traditional Scottish architecture, and outline some of the principles which lie behind the design of buildings. They assess a sample of current standard brochure designs for timber frame houses against these criteria, offer advice on how the design of new houses in the countryside might be improved, and conclude by suggesting how this advice could be implemented.
