Dear Reader
In this volume of Condensed Books we depart from our four-or five-title format to bring you James Clavell's extraordinary novel. Noble House. We do so because the book is not only the author's crowning achievement—a more than worthy successor to his other great best sellers, Shögun and Tai-Pan—but an outstanding work of fiction by any measurement.
Only twice before in our thirty-two-year publishing history have we adjusted our table of contents to the requirements of an unusually long work. In 1^72 we offered our readers Herman Wouk's The Winds of War, and we followed it in 1979 with the sequel. War and Remembrance. Both volumes were enthusiastically received, sending us the clear message that our audience appreciates our efforts to provide the most important and exciting new fiction being published—books talked about all across the country.

NOBLE HOUSE by James Clavell Delacorte Press, $19.95
Hong Kong, 1963-an empire built on pirate gold, where the reckless daring of the early ^ freebooters seethes in the blood of their descendants. Here Ian Dunross rules as tai-pan of the Noble House, the vast trading empire founded by the legendary Dirk Struan. Challenged by a brilliant young industrialist, Line Bartlett, and his beautiful colleague, Casey Tcholok, Dunross fights a desperate battle to save the Noble House. Tension builds dramatically as the artful manipulations of modern business piracy unfold against a complex background of dope smuggling, gunrunning, Communist spy rings and the ever seductive temptations of Hong Kong. The novel of the year, by the author of King Rat, Shogun and Tai-Pan. Page 113
THROUGH THE NARROW GATE by Karen Armstrong St. Martin's Press,$12.95
Karen Armstrong was only seventeen when she entered an austere religious order and prepared to become a serene and worthy bride of Christ. For seven years she worked to subdue her own nature in the demanding routine of the convent. Her lively mind sometimes rebelled at the menial tasks she was given, and her sense of isolation made her physically ill. Finally the day came when she could no longer hide from a sad truth. And then she had to ask what God really wanted of her. A startlingly honest account of one woman's experience behind a convent wall. Page 7

Coming in a future volume A GREEN DESIRE by Anton Myrer
The American century—the roaring '20s, the desperate days of the Depression, the war years—it is ali here in a dramatic new novel by the author of The Last Convertible. Sweeping from Cape Cod waters and Boston mansions to the penthouses of Wall Street moneymen, this rich saga follows the lives of two very different brothers, Tipton and Chapin Ames. Tip, exuberant and resourceful, is the born salesman who never stops believing in human beings, while Chapin, the archmanipulator, will betray anyone in his climb to wealth and power. Their rivalry is intense, but their most desperate competition is over Josefina, the passionate and daring Portuguese girl both men want. A fascinating tale of innocence and corruption, love and loyalty, money and desire.
ALONE AGAINST THE ATLANTIC by Gerry Spiess with Marlin Bree
Gerry Spiess, a schoolteacher from Minnesota, had a dream: to sail single-handedly across the Atlantic, in a boat smaller than any that had made the journey before. The boat he would use, Yankee Girl, was a mere ten feet long and five and a half feet wide, built out of used plywood. Yet Gerry believed in her enough to trust her with his life. On June 1, 1979, he set sail from Chesapeake Bay, headed for England. What followed was a brutal test for man and boat alike: a fifty-four-day battle against raging storms, physical pain, and intense loneliness. But it was also an exhilarating adventure. The true story of a historic voyage and one man's unconquerable spirit. Vissza
