According to most readers of science-fiction, the Red Planet belongs to Edgar Rice Burroughs, who made it his own private world. With remarkable imagination Burroughs laid it out geographically into dead sea bottoms inhabited by fierce barbarians and densely populated city states along the canals; created a convincing fauna and flora; and evolved an entire planetary history. He. peopled it with a human race which was both high in science (antigravity and atomic explosives) and warlike, heroic, and daring. As a result there is plenty of opportunity for noble romance and high adventure. So convincing are Burrough's characters and so imaginative the adventures that they undergo that no other author has ever been able to disestablish him as chronicler of Mars.

These three novels—which most readers consider to be the best of the Martian novels—are set in the semicivilized, unexplored areas of Mars that are unknown to the higher Martian culture. They include some of Burrough's strongest flights of imagination: the hidden city of dreamers that defends itself against the nomadic green savages by means of armies of bowmen created by mental power, and the adventures of one of these imaginary bowmen who c.ongeals into reality; the emotionless kaldanes, a remarkable blind alley of evolution, who have become simply giant heads, and inhabit separate parasitic bodies; the outlaw city where chess is played with living men who fight to the death for possession of squares; the greatest scientist on Mars, who transplants brains from one body to another; and many other original interest-laden concepts.
These novels have long been part of the growing-experience of young Americans and have been equally popular with adults who enjoy riding, (mentally), on gigantic eight-legged horses over the moss-covered dead sea bottoms, beneath the light of the two hurtling moons, Phobos and Deimos, rescuing beautiful girls, and fighting desperately for life and fortune.
