AMERICAN PAINTING
This is more than a book about painting, more than a book about painters. It is a book about America, seen fresh and whole.
Here the people and places that tnake up America are captured for all time—just as they lived and looked when this nation was founded, as they live and look today.
This is the first time that the masterworks jpf America's painters have been assembled in a continuing story that reflects the full • sweep of American life and thought. This is a story brilliantly illustrated by a rich and vigorous native art, mature in its conceptions, bold in its techniques. Taken in its entirety, it is a story important as history, exciting as romance, and a distinguished contribution to an understanding of America and Americans.
"A comprehensive, beautijul and expertly written book. It should give Americans a new appreciation of their visual tradition."

ALEXANDER ELIOT
One day," says Alexander Eliot, "we will have as much respect for our painting as we now have for our literature; and Americans will discuss Copley, Eakins, and Hopper with the same reverent familiarity we now accord to Melville, Twain, and Faulkner." With this book, that prediction comes a long step toward realization.
A descendant of Harvard's great president, Eliot was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and attended Black Mountain College and the Boston Museum School. As the art editor of TIME for the past twelve years, he has enjoyed the unique opportunity of meeting and talking with virtually all of America's leading contemporary painters, discussing their work and their approach to their art. His close contact with contemporarv American painters, together with his intimate knowledge of their predecessors' work, made possible the planning and writing of this book, produced under the general direction of the editors of T1 M E.
