Autobiography
Thomas L. Stern, M.D., practiced family medicine in rural Oregon and in Southern California for a total of twenty-two years. Dr. Stem is an exemplar, a pioneer in family practice medicine. The walls of his study are covered with awards and certificates of achievement in his field. As an orphan, he rose from poverty to a life of service and fame. He lives with his wife, Gladys, in Sun Lakes, Arizona.
"It's about house calls, delivering babies, my Oregon and California practice, about tragedy and humor. I'll tell you stories of the warmth of patients' feelings toward me as their doctor; but especially, I'll tell you about how I loved each of them, the people who trusted me enough to refer to me as 'my doctor.'
"Robert Young often referred to me as his role model for playing the Welby character. I told the stories of my life to producers and writers and they helped to shape Welby into the family doctor most people wished they could find. The television show was not... Tovább

Anyone who has ever wished for an old-fashioned doctor who makes house calls, or who has recollections of a caring family doctor, will see those values reflected in House Calls. Dr. Stem has helped bridge the gap between the direct, personal healing of the country doctor and the modern media image of the physician. As role model and technical advisor for the Marcus Welby, M.D. television series, the author has established a paradigm for family practice medicine.
In House Calls, he tells about some of the lives he has touched, and some of those that have touched his. He is a master storyteller, and his stories range from the profound to the profoundly funny. Vissza
