Nowhere else in the world does so much of the past play so great
a part in the present as it does in Britain. Rather than pull down
gaunt and grim Norman castles, the British converted them into
damp and draughty private houses; rather than do away with
the Lord Mayor's Procession they allow it yearly to dislocate
London's traffic to the despair of the Metropolitan police;
until recently, rather than admit that there were no longer wild

present the wealth of Britain pictorially. The colour photo-
graphs were taken by members of the Photographic Unit of
The British Travel and Holidays Association, the official
organization for the promotion of tourist traffic from overseas
countries to Great Britain. All the photographs have been
selected to illustrate certain aspects of the country which are
likely to be of interest to the ordinary visitor who comes to these
shores for a holiday. Obviously, it has been impossible to give
more than a foretaste of what is available, and in any case the
best things in any country are often the discoveries which every
visitor makes for himself.
