Theoretical Ecology: Principles and Applications
This important and exciting book reviews some of the recent developments in theoretical ecology and examines their practical implications. It is directed at a student audience and to general readers interested in the subject; it deals with so many new ideas (many of the references are to 1975 and 1976 papers) that research workers should also find it stimulating. Professor May and his distinguished team of co-authors focus attention on the biological assumptions that go into the various models, and on the way the consequent mathematical behaviour of the models explains aspects of the dynamics of populations or of entire communities. The approach is descriptive and intermediate mathematical details are usually glossed over, so that people with little training in mathematics will find it easy to follow the carefully edited and concise text.
