Cascading Style Sheets, or CSS, combined with lean markup can deliver stunning visual design using much less code than older HTML-driven layouts and provide far more efficiency and flexibility for the designer. Inspired by the creative possibilities of this approach to Web design, Dave Shea created the CSS Zen Garden (www.csszengarden.com). The idea was simple and elegant: Take somé well-written HTML and invite designers to apply their CSS skills to create wildly imaginative designs, and then post the underlying CSS code on the site for others to study and use. From its humble beginnings in 2003, the Zen Garden has grown to include nearly 150 designs from around the world and has set the standard for high-quality Web site design using CSS. Dave Shea is a graphic designer and the creator and cultivator of the CSS Zen Garden, which has won awards including "Best of Show" at the South by Southwest Interactive confer-ence. He has spoken at industry conferences worldwide and his work has been featured in books and magazines around the globe. Dave is alsó a member of the Web Standards Project (WaSP), a group of dedicated Web developers and designers who promote Web design based on cross-platform, non-proprietary technolo-gies. Dave is the owner and director of Bright Creative, a Web design agency, and he writes about all things Web for his online publication, mezzoblue.com.
An author, instructor, and Web designer Molly E. Holzschlag has written over 30 books on Web design and development. She's been coined "one of the greatest digerati" and deemed one of the Top 25 Most Influential Women on the Web. She teaches Webmaster courses for the University of Arizona, the University of Phoe-nix, and Pima Community College. Molly is alsó a member of the WaSP steering commit-tee and a frequent lecturer at Web design and development seminars around the world.
