Longmans' Structural Readers
It is today widely held that it is the structure of a language,
rather than the vocabulary, which causes the greatest difficulty
to the foreign learner. The supplementary readers in this series
are therefore based on the principles of structure control.
Up-to-date English courses have, at each stage, a certain
common content of sentence-patterns. This common content,
which will be familiar to the learner at the end of each stage, is
represented in the structure tables developed to govern the
preparation of the series (see A Handbook to Longmans'
Structural Readers for the structure tables and basic vocabulary).
Control of vocabulary is also maintained (as in many existing
series of supplementary readers) and one new principle has been
introduced. Content words outside the given basic vocabulary
but of value in the story are introduced freely within the
structural limits by a prescribed process of repetition.
