The Wondrous World of ANIMALS From the sleek grace of the cheetah to the lumbering gait of the elephant; from the seemingly-effortless flight of the sparrowhawk to the scuttling of the crab; from the appealing vulnerability of the puppy to the stateliness of the horse-the world of animals is a world of contrasts which never ceases to fascinate man. Fascination, however, has not prevented man from hunting to near extinction many of the species in the animal kingdom. Even if not hunted, somé creatures are losing their homes, and therefore their existence, through man's desire to cut down forests, reclaim jungles and swamps, and take over more land for agricultural purposes. Nevertheless, society is becoming more aware of the need to protect wildlife, as demonstrated by the recent campaign to save the whale. Nevertheless, society is becoming more aware of the need to protect wildlife, as demonstrated by the recent campaign to save the whale. Designated areas, such as the Yellowstone National Park in America, are protected areas where wildlife can roam freely and naturally, preserving the balance of nature. Zoos, at first showplaces for animals, are now much more conscious of the need for conservation, and have made enormous improvements both to conditions in which the animals are kept, and to breeding techniques. Although certain species have been lost, it is hoped that mankind will continue to increase its awareness of the importance of animal life, both for the preservation of the ecological structure, and for the sheer pleasure they give us.
