THE WHITE HOUSE
AN HISTORIC GUIDE
in times of crisis the eyes of the world are fixed upon 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. This is the White House, the seat of important councils and the place where a lonely man must make momentous decisions that can affect the lives of people everywhere.
But this building —graceful, expansive, and unpretentious—is not only a shrine of national importance, it is a home. The men who have lived there, their wives, their children, even their pets, have made it a warm and living home where an entire nation is welcome.
The Presidents themselves have always been aware of both aspects of the White House —the historic seat of executive power and the family hearth.
Each President has respected the historical significance of the mansion. As a result, the White House has retained its traditional appearance, much of its furnishings and decor, and many of the personal memorabilia of its occupants. The Executive Mansion has reflected the personality of each President, however brief or long his service. It has mirrored the style of public and private life of each Chief Executive who has resided there. And by virtue of these associations its historical treasures are beyond price and beyond comparison.
In 1961 the White House Historical Association was formed and one of its purposes was to tell the rich and varied story of the White House. This book is the result: an authentic account of the mansion's history, its architectural significance, and its furnishings—featuring restoration work begun by Mrs. John F. Kennedy in 1961 and continued by each succeeding Chief Executive and First Lady.
Here, then, is America's home, the White House.
