These conferences, developed for the instruction of Carthusian novices, are pure gold; they are a profound testimony to the inestimable value of every humán soul. So many people are today searching for real and authentic depth to their spiritual Iives, and these conferences bring alive the wisdom of the monastic life in the Carthusian way/ Dr Penny Jamieson, Bishop of Dunedin 'As you read these pages, you think: Of course, this is how it realiy should be; this is what it means to love God completely; now I see how it aii fits together - purity, poverty and peace. The book, moreover, does not read as if it were a translation, but the message comes straight at you, fresh from the page/ John Fenton The Carthusian Order traces its origins to the eleventh century, and its tradition has been passed on within the Order from generation to generation. It is a rare occurrence for the Order's wisdom to be shared with the outside world, but The Way of Siíenr Love does exactly that. Personal transmission is stressed, as the father-master speaks of the tradition of the spiritual parent who can 'support, affirm, give a certain visible and concrete reality to the teaching and action of the master within'. The theme of this first volume of conferences is the Beatitudes, and the apparent contradictions they contain are shown to offer a radical freedom to those who respond to the call to live whoily in Christ. An important message of the book is that this call is not restricted to those who have a vocation to the monastic life, but to all Christians: The Christian is not a separate species of humán being, but what each person is called to be. And the monk is not a separate species of Christian. He tries to be what each Christian ought to be. Conformity to Christ in faith, hope and love, this is holiness, and each person is called to this holiness/ Translated by an Anglican solitary, The Way ofSilent Love will enable readers of all backgrounds to share in the fruits of a hidden and solitary life. It is a gift which will be universally appreciated. 'It is exceptional to find classical monastic tradition expressed with such radical and contemporary depth/ Rowan Williams Vissza
