Nobody knows who was the writer of this enchanting book. It is by a nameless Russian pilgrim who recounts his experiences as he wandered from one holy place to another in Russia and Serbia during the years preceding the liberation of the serfs in 1861. His search for the secret of St Paul's dictum Tray without ceasing' was rewarded by the discovery of the now famous 'Jesus Prayer', which is the real subject of this book. The pilgrim's manuscript was discovered towards the end of last century in the possession of one of the monks of Mount Athos by the Abbot of St Michael's monastery, Kazan, who made a copy and later published it. The English translation, by the Reverend R. M. French, was first published by Philip Allan in 1930 and has remained a best-seller for over forty years.
Reginald M. French, who died in 1969, began his long ministry as Assistant Chaplain in Petrograd during the first world war, and his close association with the Eastern Orthodox Churches was lifelong. He... Tovább
