The Texas Cowboy
By the Texas Cowboy Artists Association Text by Donald Worcester Introduction by Elmer Kelton
"Ever since the first barbed-wire fence went up a hundred years ago, some people have been saying the cowboy is extinct, a remembered relic out of the past. Of late, some have even claimed he was a myth and never existed at all." So writes Texas novelist Elmer Kelton in the introduction to this pictorial history of the Texas cowboy. But, Kelton continues, the cowboy "not having read his obituary . . . continues to thrive, his working methods and routine changing with the times and technology but his general outlook on life still much the same as his grandfather's and great-grandfather's."
In painting, drawing, pastel, and bronze the art of this book demonstrates that the cowboy of today is indeed alive and well, ever proud of his link to the historic cowboy of the past. Thousands of details of the Texas cowboy's 150-year history—from the days of the Mexican vaquero and... Tovább

Thousands of details of the Texas cowboy's 150-year history—from the days of the Mexican vaquero and the mustang to the present when cowboy skills are tested in rodeos with high-paying purses—are caught by artists who are themselves cowboys, the members of the Texas Cowboy Artists Association.
In the accompanying text, noted Western historian Donald Worcester gives background material for the history portrayed in the art, often tying into the text an actual place or event depicted by an artist and supplementing fact with incident.
Kelton ends his introduction with this tribute to the art in The Texas Cowboy: "The artists who contributed to this pictorial history have been there." From one cowboy to another, it is the greatest compliment. Vissza
