EUE WIESEL-OUT OF PAINFUL TRUTH, A STUNNING TRIUMPH OF IMAGINATION_
"A remarkable experience An eloquent transfixing parable." -The Christian Science Monitor
On August 12,1952, Russia's greatest Jewish poets and novelists were executed by Stalin. They vanished without a trace. Nothing is known of how they behaved in prison, what they told their inquisitors, how they confronted their executioners. In this astonishing work of fiction, Elie Wiesei gives these martyrs back their voices gathering their lives into one, the life of poet Paltiel Kossover. Talmudic scholar turned revolutionary by pogroms and poverty, anguished witness to a half century of turbulence and war, a condemned prisoner in a Russia he helped create-Kossover lives as a Communist, but he will die as a Jew. THE TESTAMENT is his unforgettable legacy for his son, for his people, for his world._

Elie Wiesei was born in Hungary in 1928. When he was still a boy, he was deported with his family to Auschwitz and then to Buchenwald, where his parents and a younger sister died. Night his first book, is a memoir of these experiences. After the war he moved to Paris, where he adopted the French language and lived for a decade. His work as a journalist took him to Israel and finally to the United States, where he now makes his home in New York City. Since 1976 he has been Andrew Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Boston University. His books include Dawn, The Accident The Town Beyond the Wall, The Gates of the Forest A Beggar in Jerusalem (winner of the French Prix Medici for 1969), and his most recent novel, The Fifth Son. Against Silence: The Voice and Vision of Elie Wiesei, a three-volume collection of his work, was published in 1985. In 1985 Elie Wiesei received the Congressional Gold Medal. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.____
