This book is alive with the vibrant colours and highly original designs of Jill Gordon's tapestries. Her unique sense of colour and her fresh approach to subjects suitable for tapestry mark her out as one of our most talented needlepoint artists. Many of her designs are provoked by the beauty of the natural world - flowers, gardens, landscapes, fruit and vegetables, birds and butterflies. Some other tapestries are inspired by beautiful objects, by the geometry of Islamic tiles, or by antique textiles.
Jill describes the inspirations behind her tapestries, and gives advice about implementing her ideas and ways of working to produce very personal designs. Her watercolour sketches, used as templates for the tapestries, are illustrated, as are the locations, paintings or objects which sowed the seeds of her design ideas. The reader can clearly see how an idea for a tapestry starts and is followed through to the finished, stunning needlepoint. Twenty are illustrated and described in... Tovább

Twenty are illustrated and described in detail in the book, and thirteen are fully charted with stitching instructions. The charts are complemented by an appendix outlining, for example, stitching techniques, stretching finished canvases and making up into cushions and hangings, screens and placemats.
Jill first discovered her interest in needlepoint, and its suitability as a medium for her art, when working with Kaffe Fassett in the 1970s. In the foreword to this book , he describes her work as a 'wonderful explosion of colour in stitches'. Jill Gordon is now widely recognised as one of the foremost artists in the field, with works in private collections and designs marketed by Ehrman Tapestries. This is the first book to describe her work in depth and make it accessible to amateur needlepoint enthusiasts and to lovers of beautiful works of art.

Jill Gordon was born in Sussex but spent much of her childhood in Somerset, where she spent days riding across Exmoor. She began working with Kaffe Fassett at Weatherall in 1971, initially as a gardener, advertising copy writer, cook and secretary. In 1974 she took a year's Foundation Course at Cheltenham College of Art and Design and returned to work with Fassett, painting and stitching needlepoints.
She started designing for Ehrman Tapestries in 1979, had exhibitions of her watercolour paintings in London, and continues to work intensively on needlepoints, spending her spare time painting.
Jill Gordon lived in Yugoslavia for four years in the 1980s, where the flowers and landscape had a strong influence on her work. She has four children and now lives in an Elizabethan farmhouse in Staffordshire. Vissza
