USA $5.95 CAN $6.99 When Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated The Tale of Peter Rabbit, she had little idea how popular this story and the twenty-two that followed it would immediately become. No other animal stories have so captivated the imagination of children and adults alike. Today the Tales are bestsellers all over the world, translated into many foreign languages. Frederick Warne uses the most advanced technology to reproduce the originál pictures with a freshness and degree of authenticity unattainable until recently. These little books should be among the first owned by any child and their appeal is still as strong as when the first story was published nearly one hundred years ago.

Beatrix Potter was born in London in 1866. During her rather lonely childhood she studied art and natural history, and she learned to love the countryside and its animal inhabitants during family holidays, at first in Scotland and then in the Laké District. The originál Peter Rabbit was a household pet. She wrote the celebrated Peter Rabbit story in a picture letter to the little son of her last governess, and later turnéd it into a book which was to be the first in her famous series of little Tales. Her royalties enabled her to purchase Hill Top, a Cumbrian farmhouse; thus began, in 1905, an association with the Laké District which was to last until her death in 1943. She became a successful sheepfarmer and an active conservationist, working with the National Trust, an organization dedicated to the preservation of places of historic interest or natural beauty in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is very much thanks to Beatrix Potter's efforts that so much of the Laké District is now in the care of the National Trust. Frederick Warne supports the work of the National Trust. Vissza
