from Röntgen to Isotopes
by Alan Ralph Bleich
Assistant Clinical Professor of Radiology, New York Medical College; Diplomate, American
Board of Radiology.
When x-rays were discovered in 1895, imaginative journalists and legislators Were alarmed.
A bill was introduced into the New Jersey State Legislature to prohibit the use of x-ray
opera glasses in the theatre; a London newspaper advertised "x-ray proof underclothing."
Though these early fears were unfounded, the advantages and dangers of x-rays today
have both become manifest in ways undreamed of by either early experimenters or sensa-
tional writers. This book tells the story of x-rays, their scientific explanation, their
applications in medicine, industry, research, and art, and their effect on the individual
and his descendants.

Dr. Bleich tells you about Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, the German professor who refused
to license or patent his discovery of x-rays. You see the improvements which led to
today's multi-million volt machines, and understand the atomic processes involved, as
well as the technical apparatus. You learn about therapy for cancer, and the way that
the doctor uses x-rays to diagnose heart disease, skeletal defects, ulcers, and a wide
variety of other ailments. The author discusses the use of x-rays in the detection of art
and stamp forgeries and the restoration of paintings; in examining mummies for informa-
tion on diseases in early societies; in industry, for finding microscopic flaws and weak-
nesses in structural elements, computing the thickness or porosity of substances, and
dozens of other uses. The book examines radiation in relation to human genetics, the
potential risk run by both the patient and the operator of the x-ray machine, and present
and future hazards in atmospheric pollution by radiation. The truly great achievements
of diagnostic x-ray procedures are described.
The book includes 54 particularly interesting illustrations, including x-rays of flower
structure, fractures, calcification of arteries, a barium-filled stomach, bursitis of the
shoulder, the gall bladder, irregularities in a crankshaft, gears with hidden defects, as
well as early x-ray tubes and early cartoons on the subject.
First publication. Glossary. Bibliography. Index. 54 illustrations. xiv + 186pp. 5% x 8.
