Astronomy has made great sttdes during the past few years. Since I960 we have learned more than even the optimists would have believed possible; and it is also true that ash-onomy has become a part of our everyday lives. Quite apart from our investigations into the nature of the universe, we have sent our messengers far into space; and for the first time in history, men have been able to leave their home planet and travel to another world. When Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin stepped out on to the Moon, in July 1969, a new era began.
With all .these developments, it has become difficult to write a book which will pay due attention to all the various fields of research.
Patrick Moore has adopted a historical approach, beginning with the star-gazers of Stone-Age days and taking the story right through to 1976. His text is augmented by many illustrations, ranging from old prints and manuscripts to the superb new photographs obtained with the giant telescopes of today—and, of course, the pictures sent back by the astronauts, and by the automatic space-probes which have been sent to the Moon and Mars. The illustrations also include a magnificent series of paintings specially prepared for this book from the author's own telescopic observations.
First published in 1961, this book is now in its fifth revised edition. As the last edition was published before the historic Viking landings on Mars in August and September 1976,the whole book has been brought completely up to date, both in text and illustrations. It is written in popular style so that it can be understood and appreciated throughout by the reader who has no previous knowledge of the subject; but it is also a reference work which will be useful to serious students of astronomy.
