THE SPLENDOUROF
ISRAEL
Israel means many things. It is the cradle of three of the world's great religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam; it is a high powered, modern state which leads the world in agricultural techniques; it is a superb holiday destination, with attractions ranging from skiing to deep-sea diving in warm, clear waters; it is a beautiful slice of land with a ravishing Mediterranean coast, glowing deserts, shaded oases and sparkling natural reserves abounding with flowers and animals; it is also a living monument to one of thegreat civilisations of the Western world.
The ravishing photographs in this book will bring Israel to life for you. The ravishing photographs in this book will bring Israel to life for you. You can experience the hot sun and the ocean depths alive with the brilliant colour of tropical fishes at the resort of Eilat; feel the weight of the ages as you explore the remote citadel of Masada or browse through the richly-historical streets of Jerusalem following the poignant Via Dolorosa; share the exuberance of street markets and the tranquillity of the shores of the Sea of Galilee; find the sophisticated excitement of Tel Aviv's nightlife.
Alongside the pictures runs a detailed text which offers descriptions of the cities, villages, historical sites and not-to-be-missed beauty spots. It also offers some insight into one of Israel's most enduring treasures - its people.
From the enthusiasm of young kibbutzniks to the mellow happiness of European immigrants; from the vivacity of street traders to the solemn introspection of the guardians of the spiritual centres; from the idealism of the Sabras to the dedication of the orthodox - it's all here: a country, its history, its people, in revealing words and glorious photographs.
Roger Baker is a journalist and writer who lives in central London, but who spends a considerable part of the year travelling. He first visited Israel in 1979 as a guest of a government department, and received a unique insight into the country, its traditions, its history, and the huge variety of its people. Several private visits followed over the next few years.
Israel is, he suggests, the perfect bridge between the industrial West and the mysterious East. The vast number of immigrants who have flowed into the country over the years have brought European traditions with them, and these seem to fit easily into that very ancient culture and landscape that includes deserts, lush agricultural land and spectacular cities.
Other travel projects Roger Baker has worked on include a study of south-west France and the Pays Basque, and he is currently planning a study of islands around the world.
When not travelling, his main writing interests involve the theatre, food and wine and social attitudes. He has also written plays and some fiction.
