THE SPACE AROUND US
by A. Edward Tyler
Here is a comprehensive survey of all we have learned about space up to now and an educated guess as to where we are going from here. Written clearly and simply, the book is lavishly illustrated and contains a 22-page table of all launchings, both U.S. and Russian, to mid-May 1964.
The author begins with an explanation of the geography and climate in the océans of space around us—the sun, the planets, mag-netism, and radiation, including the Van Allen beits. He then proceeds to travelers in space: natural ones—planets, meteors, and cornets; and man-made—satellites and the instruments of the space probes. He explains the vast complexities of "astroga-tion" or navigation in space.
Mr. Tyler covers the difficulties of communication and tracking, and the use of electronic brains and the Deep Space Tracking Net. He considers the possibilities of life in space, both earth man on his explorations and other beings—even postulating chemical... Tovább

Mr. Tyler covers the difficulties of communication and tracking, and the use of electronic brains and the Deep Space Tracking Net. He considers the possibilities of life in space, both earth man on his explorations and other beings—even postulating chemical systems other than our own hydrocarbon-nitrogen system which could support life in environments varying widely from ours on earth. He covers the tools for space exploration—the huge optical and radio telescopes, the Venus radar experiments, the advantages and disadvantages of man vs. instruments in spacecraft. A chapter is devoted to profiles of typical spacemen. The final chapter suggests how far we may be able to get with space exploration and its technological rewards. Vissza
