The 1960s saw the emergence of a genre of historiography in West Germany that has become known as 'the social history of polities'. Georg G. Iggers, one of the leading analysts of the history of Western historical writing, has selected from the work of some of Germany's foremost historians nine examples whose translation into English is designed to fulfil a dual purpose: it is to provide a survey of the preoccupation of the 'soeicil histomns of polities', whose writings have been put by the editor into the broader context of the evolution of German historiography in this century up to the 1980s in his most valuable introduction. At the same time each article covers an aspect of pre-1914 German history which undergraduates will find helpful and stimulating, as they try to understand the complexities of the Wilhelmine Empire.
