Sigrid Undsetwas awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928, shortly after the publication of the last of the four volumes in her tetralogy-THE MASTER OF HEST-VIKEN. The author considered this extraordinary drama of life in Norway during the thirteenth century superior to her great trilogy of fourteenth-century li% which is famous throughout the world as KRISTIN LAVRANSDATTER.
This is the second novel of the tetralogy, all four of which are being republished in Giant Cardinal editions. The first, THE AXE, told the story of Olav Audunsson as a violent young man, an outlaw, and how he took Ingunn as his wife. In this second novel, Glav's story is carried forward to his4ife as master of Hestviken, his leaving home to fight against the Danes, and the death of his beloved Ingunn.
