WOMEN AND VIOLENCE By IVHriam F. Hirsch, Ed. D., ACSW, 432 pp., 6 x 9
Women and Violence provides psychologists, sociologists, health services personnel, students, and interested laypersons with a penetrating scrutiny of the conscious and unconscious manifestations of violence against women. Anthropological, sociological, and psychological viewpoints are all considered. In clear, jargon-free language, the author probes both biological and behavioral sex differences in men and women as well as reviews the major theories and research findings on the causes of aggression and violence. Incisive discussions of rape, wife-battering, and incest focus on the aggressor, the victim, societal attitudes, and inequities in the legal system.
THE'ABUSIVEIPARTNER By Maria Roy, 320 pp., 6.x 9 .
A landmark study. The Abusive Partner clearly analyzes the abusive and violent spouse from a physiological, psychological, and sociological frame of reference. This first full-scale study of the "batterer" views abusive behavior as a negation of power and places the responsibility for change solely on him. The author fully explores the nature and trends of domestic and worldwide violence . . . contributing factors such as nutrition, drugs, and alcohol . . . special populations such as the military and ex-convicts . . . and treatment strategies and available resources. Areas of special interest covered include trend analysis based on actual case studies, the most recent listings of nationwide services for batterers, and descriptions of outreach strategies._
THE TREATMENT OF ANTISOCIAL SYNDROMES By William H. Raid, 272 pp., 6x9 i.ii

THE SEXUAL AGGRESSOR Current Perspectives on Treatment Edited by Joanne G. Greer, Ph.D. and Irving R. Stuart, Ph.D.
Here is the first compilation of virtually all treatnnent methods for sex offenders now being used in the United States. It brings the concerned reader the expertise of some of the leading workers in the field of rehabilitation of sexual aggressives.
The Sexual Aggressor: Current Perspectives on Treatment surveys procedures for behavioral, psychotherapeutic, socioeduca-tional, and biomedical intervention. It will be of assistance in selecting the best treatment strategies for a variety of offenders, ranging from juveniles to the mentally retarded, incestuous fathers, pedophiles, and violent rapists.
Practical administrative issues are also addressed. Experienced program managers discuss setting up treatment centers for both outpatient and incarcerated offenders. State-level program evaluators discuss recidivism studies, while academic researchers address the technical side of evaluation of treatment procedures and treatment outcomes. A program to assist the offender in avoiding reoffending after termination of treatment is also detailed.
Provided is a detailed protocol for evaluation of criminal insanity and competency to stand trial. Relevant case law and statutory issues in treatment planning are thoroughly covered. An examination of ethical issues in enforced treatment takes a penetrating look at the patient's rights versus society's rights.
The Sexual Aggressor sets the issues of sexual violence in a relational context by exploring the impact of the offender on the victim and the victim's family. The impact of the women's movement on the burgeoning of offender treatment programs is also addressed. The volume concludes with a listing of well-established treatment programs in the U.S., for consultation and referral usej
