Fred Wander, who hímself was an inmate, recounts the day to day life of the Jewish prisoners, the young and old, the wise and the foolish, those who resist and others who submít; their widely differing backgrounds and class, their outlooks on life, their aspirations. Though reduced to life's zero point, how the prisoners cope with the extreme conditions in the concentration camp during the last stages of the Nazi era when the Allies were closing in from the East and West is narrated in humán terms of the individual with great honesty and passión and with the humor so characteristic of an oppressed people. Events are presented in a low key so that the full effect of the dreadful story is skilfully attained. On the day of liberation hope for the future lies in many hearts.
