Praise for Herbert Burkholx's THE SNOW GODS

, And far THE SLEEPING SPY by Herbert Burkholz and Clifford Irving
"'The Sleeping Spy by Herbert Burkholz and Clifford Irving is a gold cup winner The story is captivating in its inventiveness, pacing, humor and style Among that small company of writers vviio convert murderous international intrigue into lighthearted entertainment, Mr. Burkholz and Mr. Irving are plainly today's nonpareils." —Stanley Ellin
New York Times Book Review
"The Sleeping Spy is unabashed entertainment in the Ian Fleming school, with plenty of action, lots of improbable gadgets and dollops of steaming sex."
—Richard S. Walton Newsday
"The Sleeping Spy is a good read with lots of twists and surprises along the way, a long way from the dour realism of Le Carré. Burkholz and Irving's protagonists wouldn't think of venturing into the cold. Their style's more.the Riviera." —Houston Chronicle

They are literally one in a million: people whose sensitivity to the thoughts of others is so great that it approaches telepathy. Their gift, when it is discovered, is a spymaster's dream come true. They can be found anywhere, but usually—because they are bewildered by the mental cacophony that surrounds them, the incomprehensible Babel of the thoughts of others—they are found in homes for the retarded, in drug abuse centers, in asylums, among the abused and seemingly mad.
Herbert Burkholz's splendid new novel of suspense is about these "sensitives"—zealously sought and jealously guarded by the world's intelligence services. They are highly trained and lavishly pampered, employed for only the most important missions, because their value is so great—and because no sensitive has ever lived past the age of thirty-two. Among them is Ben Slade. Pop Mickelson found him in a shack in rural Texas, chained to a bed by a man who thought that the voices Ben heard were the work of the devil. Brought to the sensitives' training compound outside Washington, trained in the use of his gift and in the black arts of espionage, ostensibly making a living from his uncanny skill at high-stakes poker, he is a loyal and brilliant agent. By the standard reckoning he has two years to live. He is also, dangerously, in love—with a beautiful KGB sensitive named Nadia Petrovna, whom he met while they were spying on the same mind at a diplomatic reception.

When The Sensitives opens, Slade has a new assignment: to fly to Yugoslavia and befriend a Swedish scientist who has developed a computer chip so powerful it can revolutionize military hardware, and get the man's secret before the Russians do. The Russians are there, too, of course—in the person of Nadia. As the two agents and their support teams converge in the Balkan resort town of Bled, Herbert Burkholz leads us into a marvelously ingenious web of intrigue, suspense, and excitement—a novel where a deadly superpower struggle combines with the stories of the sensitives' fabulous exploits to make for an entertainment that is impossible to put down.
Herbert Burkholz is a native New Yorker who has lived much of his adult life in Spain, Mexico, Italy, and Greece. He is the author of eight books, including the critically acclaimed novel The Spanish Soldier, and his articles have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Playboy, and other publications. Formerly Writer-in-Residence at The College of William and Mary in Virginia, he now lives in Woodstock, New York.
