The Second Barnhart Dictionary of New Enghsh
Many people worry about how rapidly the American language is changing — or, as they often say, how it is going to the dogs. They seem to feel that any change in the language can only be for the worse. But language must change with changing times.
S. I. Hayakawa
That today's English reflects changing times is clear enough from a glance at the SECOND BARNHART DICTIONARY OF NEW ENGLISH, blissout, crustquake, delawyer, fractal, honor box, kneeling bus, marriage encounter, nude mouse, opoid, quango, relationship, syndrome, technicism, unconstructed. Whether or not it is going to the dogs will be a matter for the user of this book to decide.
Entries were selected from 450,000 new citations added to the Barnhart files from 1973-1979 by a reading of standard newspapers, magazines, periodicals and books that ranged from the New York Times to The Times (Lond on) to the Fiji Times, from Graedon's The People's Pharmacy to Reischauer's The...
Entries were selected from 450,000 new citations added to the Barnhart files from 1973-1979 by a reading of standard newspapers, magazines, periodicals and books that ranged from the New York Times to The Times (Lond on) to the Fiji Times, from Graedon's The People's Pharmacy to Reischauer's The Japanese to Schumacher's Small is Beautiful, from the New Scientist to Maclean's to Harper's.
The SECOND BARNHART DICTIONARY OF NEW ENGLISH gives longer citations that fix the environment of an entry word just as they did in the first Barnhart Dictionary of New English published in 1973. Hard words are pronounced and usage labels given where special information for the user is needed. Dates are given to show when a word entered the language according to the Barnhart files. Generous notes explain the history and special usage of our contemporary vocabulary.
born-again The phrase born again, though familiar to evangelists and many other Christians, became popular in 1976 when Presidential candidate Jimmy Carter openly described himself as "a born-again Christian. " The source of the phrase is in the Gospel of John (3:3 and 3:7): "Jesus answered and said . . . Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God . . . Marvel not that I said unto thee. Ye must be born again. "
A new feature is the language note alphabetically inserted into the main list which discusses the processes by which the language changes and the forces that shape it.
English has become an international language still absorbing terms and expressions from many other language sources. The SECOND BARNHART DICTIONARY OF NEW ENGLISH records international English and is designed to supplement standard references wherever the language is used. The authors have been assisted by an international Editorial Advisory Committee composed of distinguished English language scholars from Europe, Great Britain, Canada, Japan, and the United States.
The SECOND BARNHART DICTIONARY OF NEW ENGLISH is first a tool for users of English — and word enthusiasts.
