When Jay first told me that the title of his new book was to be "The Romance of Bridge", I confess that for a moment I thought he was talking about romances between bridge players away from the table: Grace Kelly-Prince Rainier and Julius Caesar-Cleopatra types of romances. "He'll do well to avoid a libel suit," I thought. Of course. Jay had undertaken the much more difficult, albeit safer, task of writing about romance at the bridge table.
Since Jay's first three hooks, "Logic, Intuition and Instinct at the Bridge Table", "Moments of Truth at the Bridge Table" and "Serendipity in Bridge " dealt with psychology and other intangibles in bridge and the philosophy of bridge, the romance of bridge was a natural progression. I think you'll agree that Jay brings a fresh, original perspective to bridge writing. For this book, he has joined hands with Ghassan Ghanem of Jordan as co-author. Ghassan is Mr. Bridge in the Pan Arab world, president of the World Bridge Federation's Middle East/Asia zone (BFAME), a frequent representative of Jordan's international teams and chief promoter and organizer of their major tournaments. It is a providential collaboration.
Romance may not be the first thing you think about in connection with bridge - that was certainly the case with me. Perhaps it is the competition or the concentration needed to succeed you first think about. Or perhaps it is the sociabihty of the game or its limitless entertainment value. As well, there are many other important facets of bridge - mental toughness, the ability to bring out the best in partner and teammates and the necessity to count the hands are just a few. And then there are the qualities admired by Jay: logic, intuition, instinct, serendipity and romance. You see, I told you he brings a different perspective to bridge. Vissza
