ANTHONY ENDREY was born in 1922 in Hungary of a distinguished family of lawyers and politicians. He completed his secondary education in the St Norbert's College of the Praemonstraten-sian Canons with High Distinction right through and then obtained a degree of Doctor of Law summa cum laude at the Petrus Pázmány University in Budapest, having also studied for two semesters as a stipendiât of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry at the Friedrich Wilhelm University of Berlin. In addition to his legal studies, he also studied Economic Theory, Financial Theory and other related subjects and worked for one year in the seminar of the great Hungarian economist, Professor Ákos Navratil. As a law student, he was already a contributor of the legal journal "Gazdasági Jog" (Economic Law). He passed the prescribed examinations for Advocates and Judges in July 1947 and opened his own law office in his hometown.
Because of his strong opposition to Communism, he was obliged to flee to Austria at the end of 1948 and migrated to Australia in April 1949. After initial difficulties, he obtained a degree of Bachelor of Law with First Class Honours at the University of Tasmania and was admitted to the Australian Bar in April 1956. Already in his first year, he created a legal precedent in a case concerning the land titles system. He transferred his legal practice to Melbourne in 1957 and conducted a number of important cases which got into the Victorian Law Reports several times. He was appointed permanent Legal Adviser to one of the most important standing committees of the Australian Senate in 1972 whilst still continuing his practice at the Bar. He was able to count some of the leading Australian and British companies among his clients, including subsidiaries of the Vickers Armstrongs group, Lloyds of London, the Council of Australian Credit Societies, the "The Age" newspaper, National Trustees of Australasia, the Public Trustee of Victoria and a number of large insurance companies. He was appointed a Queen's Counsel for Victoria and Tasmania in 1975. In addition to his legal practice, he was breeding beef cattle from 1971 onward and his registered Aberdeen Angus stud won a second prize at the 1985 Royal Melbourne Show. He returned to Hungary in May 1989 and carried on an international and Hungarian legal practice in his former hometown until January 2000. He speaks six foreign languages. He published eleven books and a longer essay whilst in Australia, dealing mainly with Hungarian history, and he wrote this book and four further books and an historical essay after having returned to Hungary.
