History and Philosophy of Science
The Road of Science and the Ways to God
Stanley L. Jaki
Originally presented as the Gilford Lectures for 1975 and 1976 at the University of Edinburgh, this challenging work illuminates the intimate connection between scientific creativity and natural theology. Stanley L. Jaki draws heavily upon the history and philosophy of science to show that a rational belief in the existence of a Creator, or at least an epistemology germane to such a belief, played a crucial role in the rise of science and in all its great creative advances.
"The appearance of [Jaki's] 1974-75 and 1975-76 Gifford Lectures is the publishing event of the year for those interested in the history of science and the relations between science and natural theology."—Frank R. Haig, S.J., Theological Studies

"Professor Jaki develops his theme with a masterly command of the original sources, and the text is supported by over a hundred pages of notes and references. It is so densely packed with ideas that it is not easy to read, but scientists, philosophers and theologians will find it a mine of stimulating analysis."—P. E. Hodgson, Nature
"The book will be noticed deservedly not merely because of the prestige of the Gifford label but also because of its author's erudition and his peppery interpretations of the history of philosophy and science. The erudition is evident in 125 pages of clearly keyed notes (which beg to be read along with the text and in which the reader will find some of Jaki's sharpest barbs) as well as twenty pages of author and subject indexes. It is a well-made book, in which the publisher can take warranted pride."—Frederick Ferre, Journal of Religion
Stanley L. Jaki, a Hungarian-born scientist and Benedictine priest, is Distinguished University Professor at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. He is author of The Origin of Science and the Science of Its Origin and Science and Creation: From Eternal Cycles to an Oscillating Universe, also published by the Scottish Academic Press. Jaki was awarded the Lecomte du Nouy Prize in 1970.
