An isolated Orthodox Jewish community buried in the hill country behind Los Angeles is the last place Sergeant Decker expects to be called to, especially to investigate a rape charge. He's sure however that the community's suspicion of outsiders is going to make the case one of the most awkward he's handled, a suspicion quickly confirmed by what seems to him obstinate non-co-operation on the part of
potential witnesses.
But there's one member of the community with whom he appears to be able to communicate. Rina Lazarus, the young widow who found
the victim and alerted the police, tries to explain to Decker the religious practices that stand in the way of the information he needs, offering at the same time a fascinating insight into her world.
But the cost of maintaining that world's privacy could be terrifyingly high, Decker fears, for all the signs point to the rapist's first crime in
the community not...
