No two people were more important to
N American conservatism in the postwar era than William F. Buckley Jr. and Ronald Reagan. Buckley's writings and those of the people he published in National Review provided the intellectual underpinnings, while Reagan brought the conservative movement out of the political wilderness and into the White House. It is entirely appropriate that Buckley's final book should be an appreciation of his friend Ronald Reagan.
They first met in California in i960, when Reagan was called upon to introduce a speech by Buckley. Buckley later described this moment as "a nifty allegoiy of [Reagan's] approach to foreign policy: the calm appraisal of a situation, the willingness to take risks, and then the decisive moment leading to lights and sound." The Buckleys and Reagans developed a close lifelong friendship. Buckley was one of Reagan's political mentors, advising him during his campaigns and terms as governor of California and president. For more than thirty years, the two men shared inside jokes and vacations, advised each other on domestic and international politics, and mentored each other's children.
Through private letters, recorded exchanges, and personal reminiscences, The Reagan I Knew traces (continued on back flap)
(continued from front flap) the evolution of an extraordinary friendship between two American political giants, neither of whom would have accomplished what he did without the other.
