Why is this? Reader's Digest editors have long puzzled over this question. Why has the greatest of all books been neglected by so many for so long? Many people anxious to read the full Bible have felt that the sheer length and complexity of its nearly one million words have been genuine obstacles.
Theologians, scholars, and Bible authorities agree that The Reader's Digest Bible—two years in the planning, four years in the making—is the first true condensation of the Bible.
A CONDENSATION IS NOT AN ABRIDGMENT
Many people use the terms condensation and abridgment as if they had the same meaning. They do not. Abridgment means reduction of length by elimination of entire sections of text and, in the case of the Bible, often of whole books as well. Condensation achieves reduction principally through line-by-line, word-by-word diminution, as well as through deletion of selected blocks of text. There are many abridgments of the Bible. But The Reader's Digest Bible is unique in that it is the only true condensation of the Bible.
THE READER'S DIGEST BIBLE IS FOR
• The individual who has little or no knowledge of the Bible but who wants to become acquainted firsthand with the full essence of Biblical narrative, teaching, and philosophy.
