The Quest for Certainty A Study of the Relation Between Knowledge and Action The Quest for Certainty is based on the Gifford Lectures delivered by Dewey at the University of Edinburgh in the spring of 1929, and in it he develops his basic theories of thinking and knowledge to the highest point they ever reached in his work. While containing the foundations of an experimentál logic, the quest for certainty is not written from the point of view of technical logic or to develop the mere techniques of abstraction. While containing the foundations of an experimentál logic, the quest for certainty is not written from the point of view of technical logic or to develop the mere techniques of abstraction. In such chapters as "Philosophy's Search for the Immutable," "Conflict of Authorities," "The Art of Acceptance and the Art of Control," "The Play of Ideas," "The Supremacy of Method," "The Construction of Good" and "The Copernican Revolution" he clearly shows the changes in modes of consecutive investigation in science and philosophy from the pre-scientific analysis of the classic and middle ages to the ways of thought characteristic of modern science and philosophy. In quest for certainty, therefore, John Dewey outlined methods of investigation for the modern age that have already transformed scientific and philosophic thought and, through them, the world. "[Dewey's] insights into the movements of the universe as it shows itself to men goes to as high a point as has ever been reached by articulate speech." -Olivér Wendell Holmes, Jr. "We are living in the midst of the period subject to Dewey's influence. . ." -Alfréd North Whitehead Vissza
