'it is impossible not to be grateful for the idea and for the skill, industry, and learning that have gone to carry it out." The Sunday Times
'Professor Dobree, the general editor of tlie series, is a scholar who knows the value of criticism: he is also aware that worth-while knowledge of a man's writing is only to be had by reading it. This is a hard saying in a world where there seems so little time for anything, but it is the only honest word, and to say it is the unashamed purpose of this series. Consequently, though each of these volumes has an excellent introduction comprising about half the book, an even more valuable half is devoted to an intelligently edited bibliography. These well-constructed lists cannot be praised too highly.' Time and Tide
'I believe that they will surprise a general public by the freshness of their approach to the appreciation as distinct from the study of literature; and that they will enhance the enjoyment of reading by relating literature to the climate of thought and feeling in which it was produced.'
