The Prado Museum, in Madrid, has been called the "museum-lover's museum,,, for nowhere else is there such a concentra-tion of top performances by major masters. These were gathered in the course of three centuries by the Hapsburg and Bourbon rulers of Spain—dis-criminating and knowledgeable royal patrons of art, whatever else history may say of them. They deserve our gratitude for their perseverance and their connoisseurship: Isabella the Catholic, Charles V, Philip II, and the others, who collected Rubens and Titian, sought the friendship of Velázquez, and encouraged the young Goya; and without resorting to con-quest or coercion, have left us an unparalleled treasure. the Master of Flemalle, Rogier van der Weyden, Bruegel, Raphael, and Mantegna; selec-tions from the superb groups by Tintoretto, Veronese, Rubens, Van Dyck; from the uniquely rich collections of Bosch and Titian. And, of course, from the Spanish painters, for no-where else can they be seen in such profusion and quality. The Prado's distinguished and gra-cious Deputy Director, Senor F. J. Sanchez Canton, acts as our guide. He traces for us the history of the Prado and its collections in a straightforward but fascinating review, and then he acquaints us with the masterpieces which he has singled out for our inspection. It is an informál but altogether rewarding experience.
