Senor Sánchez Cantón has had a long association with the niuseum, and no one is better fitted to act as our guide to the treasures contained in it. This book, first published in 1959, has since been extensively revised; it now contains over 300 illustrations (of which nearly 100 are in colour), repróducing masterpieces by Bosch, Brueghel, El Greco, Goya, Rubens, Titian, Velasquez and many other great masters. The author gives a fascinating account of the growth of the Prado collection, from the first acquisitions by Castilian kings in the fifteenth century down to the bequests and gifts of modern times, and provides extensive descriptive notes for each of the colour plates. Don Francisco Javier Sánchez Cantón was born in 1891. At the age of 22 he took his doctorate in Arts at the University of Madrid, and was appointed lecturer there in 1918. Four years later he became Deputy Director of the Prado, and in 1960 he was appointed Director. He has thus been closely concerned with and responsible for the extensive changes and improvements that have taken place in the museum during recent years.
