Popé John Paul II is a popé unlike any other. He is a modern man, a man of the jet age, comfortable at center stage, open with his opinions, and straightforward in communicating them. He was born on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice in southern Poland and baptized Karol Jozef Wojtyla (pronounced "voy-TEAwas"). Karol and his older brother, Edmund, were raised alone by their father after their mother died. Even at an early age, Karol enjoyed speaking before crowds. He won roles in several school plays and starred in a production that toured the region. When he was 17, Karol moved to Krakow and enrolled in the philosophy department at the university. He spent his free time with an experimentál theater troupe. The Nazi occupation forced both the university and the theater group underground, and he took a job as a stonecutter.
