"deviants/' new factions and public conflicts develop. In this
book, sociologist Edwin Schur examines the "politics of
deviance," discussing such topics as:
• Control through containment—moral and social isolation of
gays, mental patients, the handicapped, and others.
• Role of the state and of "the power elite."
• Stigma contests—struggles to define who and what constitute
social "problems."
• Stereotypes and propaganda—how they help or hurt those
protesting stigma.
• Deviance protest movements—their potential and the
obstacles they face.
Viewing deviance-defining as an exercise of social power, this
book emphasizes collective conflict and the fight against
systematic oppression. Special topics the author explores
include rape, prisons, prostitution, abortion, corporate crime,
mental illness, and gay activism.
