THE POLITICS OF ARISTOTLE Edited and Translated by Ernest Barker
Aristotle's Politics, along with Plato's Republic, constitutes the fountainhead of social and political theory. Sir Ernest Barker, in his Preface to this edition, describes the kind of translation which he feels is needed by the English-speak-ing world. "They need a version which is couched in a modern style (such as a writer would use to-day in treating of politics) and furnished with appropriate 'helps to study' which will bring its substance home to their minds."
In addition to translating The Politics Into a contemporary prose style. Sir Ernest has elucidated the course of Aristotle's argument, from time to time, with explanations enclosed in brackets, or added as footnotes. The twofold result is a definitive translation of The Politics and an independent, but correlated, scholarly narrative—an admirable consolidation of the wisdom of Aristotle with the guidance of modern scholarship.
