The Pleasantries of the Incredible Mulla Nasrudin The appeal of Nasrudin is as universal and timeless ás the truths he illustrates. The first book of his stories was acclaimed by critics as a collection of jokes, a children's book and a volume of philosophy. He appears currently in an Indián literary magaziné, on the cover of a High-Energy Physics Conference in the U.S.A. and in a Boy Scouts' journal. His anecdotes were recently discussed as a mystical training system by the Hibbert Journal, a periodical of the highest standing in religious studies. This new collection is as delightful and challenging as the last, outstanding both as an anthology of humour and a book of wisdom. It contains stories used by the Sufi masters Rumi, Jami and Attar, and alsó those collected by Idries Shah from ancient manuscripts and from cycles of oral literature and tradition in the Persian, Afghan, Turkish and Arabic cultures. While complete in itself, this volume is planned to fit in with the whole rangé of Shah's writing which now claims a readership far beyond the orientalist or 'occultist' public. It follows the highly successful Tales of the Dervishes and complements The Way of the Sufi, an exposition of Suíi philosophy by means of extracts from the classical writings, lectures and apologues of the dervishes. Richárd Williams's superbly witty and delicate illustrations perfectly embellish the text. He is at present filming the Nasrudin stories for a colour-cartoon series. Vissza
