Professor V. H. Mottram was born in Tewkesbury in 1882, and migrated with his family to Bristol in the same year, and to London in 1887. Educated at Caterham School and St Olave's Grammar School, he was sizar, scholar, and fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, 1901-11, Senior Demonstrator of Physiology in Liverpool University, 19II14, Lecturer in Physiology in McGill University, Montreal, 1914-16, and University of Toronto, 1916. The years 1916-18 were spent in tuberculosis sanatoria. From 1918 to 1919 he was Senior Science Master of Caterham School. He held a biological research post with Lever Bros., 1919-20, and was Professor of Physiology in the University of London at King's College of Household and Social Science from 1920 to 1944 when he retired from active teaching. His hobbies are books, art, photography, and music, and he is interested in border-line and new subjects - e.g. chemical physiology in its earlier days at Cambridge, and, later, dietetics, which has become his...
