The glories of Renaissance art are annong the finest examples of man's dignity. Yet they are only one aspect of a world which also encompassed the atrocities of a Borgia, the fanaticism of a Savonarola, and the cynicism of a Machiavelli. Italian society was complex, exciting, and dramatic; it was a world of violence that threw up geniuses with the ease of a juggler.
Virtuosity and originality shone through in every field of action: in art, in thought, in politics, in murder. In this book the whole sweep of Renaissance achievement is vividly portrayed and analysed by Dr d. H. Plumb, assisted by a distinguished team of associates which includes Sir Kenneth Clark, Dr J.
