The Oxford Illustrated Dictionary was first published in 1962, with the object of combining the' function of an elementary encyclopaedia and a dictionary of words. The range of entries covered historical events, famous people, geographical features, and governments of the world, as well as a general vocabulary roughly equivalent to that of The Concise Oxford Dictionary. Illustrations were planned to amplify definitions especially where the nature of the thing defined could be shown more clearly than in words, as, for example, the rigging of a ship, the arrangement of bones in a skeleton, or the deaf-and-dumb alphabet. The Dictionary was greeted by The Guardian as 'a far-ranging fact book as well as a properly equipped word book', and Country Life, turning the pages at random, could 'find information of the Falkland Islands and Monteverdi, as well as drawings of a high-perch phaeton and a ruminant's stomach'.

Since it was first published the Dictionary has been reprinted three times, with a lengthening Addenda list and such modifications in the text as were required by changes in current affairs. Now it appears in a. new edition, entirely revised and reset. The revision includes entries for previously unrecorded words that have recently become established in modern usage, and also provides an up-to-date record of developments in world affairs, institutions, and science and technology in everyday life. All the illustrations have been reexamined and many have been modernized or replaced, a few have been dropped, and a number of completely new ones have been added.
