Somé years ago Evelyn Waugh had the disconcerting experience, which is not so rare as he feared, of suffering from a brief attack of hallucinations. Such a situation, in which the mind conjures up non-existent noises and voices although the reason re-mains active, is irresistible to a writer. In The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold a well-known author cuts a ludicrous but pathetic figure as the fringes of imagination and reality begin to get more and more blurred. If, as the medical figures say, rather more than half of the population inhabit the frontiers of insanity, then this curious and diverting növel should act as a warning to them and a delight to us . or vice versa.
