The Old South. The very words conjure up images of beautiful homes, gracious manners, leisured living, fashionable dressing, and polished refinement. While stories about what the South was like in the early days of our nation have often been romanticized and embellished, strong evidence exists today-in the plantations, the carefully tended gardens, the public buildings, and the stretches of fertile land-that at one time there indeed reigned a very special way of life.
Though the Old South no longer exists as a true state of being, there is no doubt, at least among the region's residents, that it has survived as a state of mind.
