This useful pocket guide contains information on numerous types of ships —merchant ships, fishing vessels, warships and sailing ships. The shipping industry is constantly changing; new types of vessels appear as others lose their importance. In this revised edition the text has been thoroughly brought up to date and deals with such developments as short-sea and oceangoing container ships, the use of nuclear power, and the helicopter as an essential part of the equipment of nearly every type of warship.
Explanatory notes on the Plimsoll line, tonnage, propulsion, and various terms of seamanship are also included. There are descriptions of ensigns, flags, and signals, and classified lists of shipping companies with the systems of naming their vessels. Details of shipping colours are shown in the 8 colour plates.
The text is also illustrated with numerous line drawings and black and white photographs, a very large number of them being new for this edition.
